When Must a Dependent File a Tax Return?
If you (or your child) can be claimed as a dependent on another's tax return, are single, and are either under age 65 or not blind, you (or your child) must file a return if the following circumstances apply:
- Your (or your child's) unearned income was more than $1,300.
- Your (or your child's) earned income was more than $14,600.
- Your (or your child's) gross income was more than the larger of $1,300 or your earned income (up to $14,150), plus $450.
