Understanding the Refund Process

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Once your tax return has been filed and accepted, it’s only a matter of time before you start wondering how long it’s going to take to get your money.  According to the IRS website, most refunds are issued within 21 days of acceptance.  However, some refunds are taking longer due to COVID-19 processing delays.

The best way to check the status of your tax refund is to use the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund?” tool.  To get started, you’ll need your Social Security Number or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount.

In most cases, the tool will take you through three phases while it’s being processed: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. You can start checking the refund status 24 hours after e-file acceptance. Don’t waste your time checking multiple times a day because it’s only updated once daily, usually at night.

What does each phase of the process mean?

  • Return Received means the IRS received your return and it’s being processed. An explanation or further instructions may be provided depending on your situation. If more information is needed, the IRS will send you a letter in the mail. At this stage, there will be no dates posted for your expected refund.
  • Refund Approved means the IRS finished processing your return and your refund was approved.  So the IRS is preparing to issue your refund. A refund date will be provided but is not guaranteed.
  • Refund Sent means the IRS sent your refund based on the chosen refund method.  In the event you requested to have your refund deposited into your bank account – but you provided incorrect account information – a check will be mailed to the address on your return when the direct deposit fails.

Calling the IRS will not speed up the refund process. Their representatives can only help you if it’s been more than 21 days since e-filing.
