Keep in mind, the number of calories burned will vary based on each person’s weight, body fat percentage, age, etc. For the sake of this article, we used the average weight for men which is 197.9 pounds (89.8 kg) and 170.6 pounds. (77.4 kg) for women.

How to calculate calories burned

You can rely on websites and apps to estimate calories burned or use metabolic equivalents (METs) to calculate it yourself. MET values are based on how much oxygen your body consumes during an activity versus being at rest. One MET is equal to burning 1 kcal/min. It’s also the same as using 3.5mL of oxygen per kilogram of bodyweight per minute. The MET value of almost any activity can be found using the Compendium of Physical Activities. You can estimate your calories burned per minute using the following equation:

MET value of activity X 3.5 X Your bodyweight in kilograms/200 = Calories burned per minute

To determine your total calories burned, use the following equation:

Calories per minute X Minutes of activity = Total calories burned.

Converting your weight to kilograms is fairly easy, too. Just Google “lbs to kg” and use the calculator that pops up. Once you have both pieces of information, multiply the figures together and that will tell you the number of calories burned.
